Stuart BOOTH

Stuart BOOTH
Ref: BOOTH
An engineer turned artist, Stuart considers himself fortunate enough to be able to combine his love of painting with a lifelong enthusiasm for motorsport and all forms of transport.
He was born in London but has spent most of his life in the Bristol area of the UK. His earliest memories are of the London Midland main railway line, which passed close to his London home, and of the last days of the London trams. After moving to Bristol he could watch aircraft preparing to land at the nearby Filton base of the then Bristol Aeroplane Company and he spent many happy hours watching Western Region trains in the West Country.
The 1954 British Grand Prix, seen on very grainy black and white television, was when he became hooked on motor racing for life; the margins of his school and college notebooks were filled with designs for racing cars but unfortunately none came to fruition!
An aircraft engineering apprenticeship led to an engineering degree and work on Concorde design. Gradually he began to spend more of his spare time on his other interests of drawing and painting. A few watercolours were sold to friends and he progressed from local evening classes to a distance-learning course with the Open College of Art. When he had the opportunity to take early retirement he took it with open arms so as to paint full time.
Watercolours gave way to acrylics and then to oils. Stuart now paints exclusively in oils as he finds the medium much more versatile and suited to the detail that the subject matter requires, although he often uses acrylic underpainting to speed drying in the initial phases.

Martin BUFFERY

Martin BUFFERY
Ref: BUFF

Martin has spent most of his life in the world of art and design. An early interest in science fiction led to an appreciation of the imaginative paintings of illustrators like Jim Burns or Alan Lee and this combined with the influence of Ridley Scott's film "Bladerunner", pointed the way towards a career in art.

However an interview with one of the chief designers at the Rover car company when he was sixteen altered Martin's trajectory away from pure art and illustration and into the world of automotive design. He has spent nearly twenty years in this demanding world initially gaining an MA at Coventry University before becoming a principal designer for Rover group and then Land Rover. His work has included the Land Rover Defender SVX show car and more recently he was responsible for the interior design of the Land Rover Freelander2.

However in the increasingly complex world of automotive design Martin has found himself spending more time in meetings than at the drawing board, and to compensate for this started drawing for his own pleasure in his spare time. Gradually this hobby became more serious and exhibitions with the Guild of Aviation Artists and the Guild of Motoring Artists followed.

His work is mostly in either pencil or watercolour, and although Martin enjoys commissions on any subject concentrates mostly on automotive, aviation and animal subjects.

When not drawing and painting Martin enjoys travelling, which he finds a great inspiration for his work, and after gaining his private pilots license in 2001 flies a Cessna C152 around the Warwickshire countryside.

Caroline COOK

Caroline COOK
Ref: COOK
Caroline was born in Cornwall and has painted horses and other animals since she was old enough to hold a paintbrush. She sold her first painting, a study of a fox cub, when she was 15.
She is self taught and her paintings are mainly of horses in action, particularly racehorses, paddock and stud scenes in vibrant but subtle acrylics.

Until recently, she only undertook private commissions, as she combined her painting with her role as assistant to her husband, former West Country racehorse trainer, Trevor Hallett. Many of these commissions are of National Hunt horses including the great Desert Orchid for his trainer, David Elsworth.

Caroline's paintings reflect her love of thoroughbreds and her passion for racing. Her work with racehorses, particularly her knowledge of racing injuries and their treatment has enhanced her understanding of the anatomy of the horse, which is reflected in her work.

Caroline Cook is resident artist at Cheltenham Racecourse. A permanent stand on Race Days is situated in Hurdlers Hall behind the Arkle statue.

Paul DOVE

Paul DOVE
Ref: DOVE
Pauls love of motor racing is expressed in his vibrant use of colour and dynamic compositions. Complex crowd scenes and dramatic action filled canvases have established this young artist at the head of his field.
He was enthusiastically praised, by Roy Salvadori, at the prestigious Maserati sponsored 4th International Motoring and Motor Racing Art Competition for the way he portrayed the Monaco scene that captured Dove the first prize. The judging panel also included Sir Stirling Moss, Derek Bell, Jackie Oliver and the actor Rowan Atkinson who is an avid motor racing fan.

Dove’s winning performance has proved to be the ideal exposure for this young Cornish based artist. Paul's paintings now feature in various collections around the world as well as the U.K. including the Haynes Motor Mueseum and the Wheatcroft family.
Paul’s talent has moved on and his paintings are not just accurate representational illustrations of motor races. They are works of art that give life and feeling as if you are actually watching the race for your self, as if you are part of the crowd.

Dove works predominantly in oil, starting with thumbnail sketches worked up from various reference
materials ranging from books and film footage of the various great races of the past.

Paul Dove is an extremely talented artist who belies his years with the maturity with which he handles both difficult compositions and his expert handling of paint. His attention to detail is remarkable and that is why you can keep coming back to his paintings time and time again and keep seeing something fresh each time.

George Earl's daughter, Maud, inherited her father's artistic talents and went on to become a successful animal painter.

Lionel EDWARDS

Lionel EDWARDS
Ref: EDWARDS
Lionel Edwards, born in Bristol in 1878, was one of the most popular illustrators of hunting and sporting subjects of the twentieth century.

He grew up in North Wales following country pursuits rather than a formal education. Although originally destined for the army, a brief spell with the military proved that this was a career for which he had no aptitude. However, from the age of six he had been actively drawing horses and therefore his mother encouraged his artistic vocation. He studied in London at Heatherly's School of Art, the equivalent of the Atelier Julien in Paris.

Edwards is known as the Grand Old Man of Sporting Art because he was an ardent hunter and brilliant draftsman. He was perfectly equipped to portray the frisson of the hunting field: hounds with tongues rolling in exhaustion, strained finely tuned horses on the alert for their next cue, and earnest fraught riders completely absorbed in the physical exertion of thundering over the raw winter land at breakneck pace.

Lionel Edwards was deeply involved with and committed to British field sports, even including the challenge of the weather. Having worked for The Graphic and Punch before the First World War, he was increasingly drawn to hunting and sporting art, writing and illustrating many books on field sports. His experience during the First World War in the army remount service, when he had "four solid years of nothing but horse", brought an exciting realism to his art. His paintings are usually endowed with "tempered" colours reflecting the climate and light, and the influence of these two factors on the British countryside.

Lionel Edwards died in 1966.

Lisa MILLER

Lisa MILLER
Ref: MILLER
Lisa’s interest in horse-racing began early on - from the age of ten she would scan the racing section of the Saturday morning papers and pick out a favourite horse or one with an unusual name so she could watch its progress on the television later that afternoon. Trips to local racecourses with her mum followed - often on a crowded coach full of rowdy betting-shop clients! Haydock, York, Doncaster, Pontefract and Ripon were amongst those first visits and watching Lester Piggott win the May Hill Stakes on Midway Lady was undoubtedly one of the highlights.

Having always loved drawing, Lisa began to try her hand at horses. Early portraits (in pastel and pencil) included Northern Dancer, The Minstrel and Nijinsky but it was not until college that she attempted her first painting - this of Shergar in acrylic.

Lisa then went on to college in South Wales for two years where she trained as a wildlife illustrator along with future husband David. Since leaving college fifteen years ago they have run a successful illustration business with clients as diverse as the RSPB and Whipsnade Wild Animal Park
Although primarily working to commission, her equestrian paintings have been on display at the Wykeham Gallery, Stockbridge, The Mall Galleries, London, The Obsidian Gallery, Buckinghamshire, The Millyard Gallery, Yorkshire and the Sporting Gallery, Tetbury. She has also previously had work selected for the Society of Wildlife Artists Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.

Having recently moved back to West Wales, Lisa likes to spend her time at the local point-to-point and harness-racing meetings.

Sir Alfred MUNNINGS

Sir Alfred MUNNINGS
Ref: MUNN
Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) was born in Mendham, Suffolk, to an East Anglian farming family. He first indicated his artistic talent during his apprenticeship to a firm of lithographers in Norfolk, where he studied at Norwich School of Art in the evening. By 1899, he had exhibited two paintings at the Royal Academy.
He was last in the line of prominent equestrian portraitists and is considered by many art critics to have been the finest sporting painter of the 20th century. He was President of The Royal Academy from 1944 to 1949.

After working as an official artist in the First World War, Munnings married and settled permanently at Castle House, in Dedham, Suffolk. Concentrating particularly upon equestrian work, he was so successful in what was, at the time, an unfashionable field that he rose from his relatively humble beginnings to become both a knight and the President of the Royal Academy between 1944 and 1949.

Munnings was an enthusiastic horseman and most of his greatest works featured either the racecourse or the hunt. His sporting scenes have developed a reputation as being amongst the greatest of twentieth century. He also painted very personal interpretations of the English countryside, as well as portraits, but these themes tended to be eclipsed by his tremendous success as a sporting artist.

Munnings’s reputation was always slightly tarnished for contemporary critics because of his very blunt, strong minded personality and his opposition to the abstract work which was becoming increasingly popular but, more recently, he has received the acclaim his outstanding work deserves.

With Stubbs and Herring, Munnings is one of a trio of the greatest sporting artists of all time. His best original paintings now sell for figures in excess of £1,000,000 and a record price of £2,700,000 was paid for his painting Lord and Lady Mildmay of Flete with their Children at Christie’s in 1999. Munnings’s work is now on display at many of the most prestigious galleries and museums in the world.

Karen NEALE

Karen NEALE
Ref: NEALE

Karen is a London based artist and architect. Wherever she is in the world, her passion is sketching and painting life around her, in her annotated, watercolour sketchbook diaries.

This might be in the bustle of a market, on the top of a cathedral or down in a wine cellar, the middle of a city or even the middle of nowhere. Karen has kept annotated, watercolour sketchbook diaries for almost twenty years. She stands in situ and draws with bic biros, (She does not use a camera) adding watercolour and notes around the perimeter. Sometimes the words venture into the drawing and become an integral part.

She then has a wonderful memory of being completely absorbed in a place. Many of her paintings and art projects have evolved from these diaries and her desire to draw.
In 2001 she was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to undertake an artist’s journey through World Heritage Cities and Sites from France, travelling eastwards through eight countries, including Iran, Uzbekistan and India to Nepal, recording it all in the pages of her sketchbook diary. Subsequently she has spent time in Cuba, and the World Heritage City of Havana, culminating with a solo exhibition of her work at the British Ambassador’s Residence there.
Karen was the ‘MCC Young Cricket Artist for 2005’, based at Lord’s Cricket Ground

SNAFFLES

SNAFFLES
Ref: SNAF
Born in 1884, Snaffles was one of the greatest sporting and military artists of his time.

Charlie Johnson Payne was the fourth of a bootmaker’s eight children and from his youth developed a passion for all things military. He tried to enlist in the army to fight in the Boer war, but was rejected on the grounds that he was too young. Eventually, he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery at the age of 18 as a gunner but in 1906 he was forced to leave because of illness. However, his time in the army was influential, as his first recorded works of semi-caricature portrait date from this time.

Invalided out of World War One, Payne took a job as a war artist for The Graphic and it was during these years that he produced some of his finest military work. After the war his work became more varied, although he still often contributed to The Sporting & Dramatic News.

It was as a sporting artist that "Snaffles" built his reputation and, after the War, he worked on the hunting, shooting, polo, racing and fishing subjects which made his name. The classic series of pig-sticking prints he completed in India in the 1920s are perhaps the images for which he is best known and his depictions of military life in the Raj are second to none.

Snaffles built an element of humour into his work and the captions to his subjects were often as important as the artwork. Much of his work was published in limited edition format.

Snaffles died in 1967.

Michael TURNER

MICHAEL TURNER
Michael Turner was born in Harrow, Middlesex, in 1934. Raised in the suburbs of London during the Second World War, he was inspired by the exploits of the R.A.F. and developed an early talent for aircraft recognition, drawing aeroplanes in his school exercise books to the chagrin of his teachers. This enthusiasm for aviation found a parallel passion in the thrill of motor racing after a holiday visit to the Isle of Man in 1947, where he chanced to see the first post war revival of the British Empire Trophy Race. From that moment, with the indulgence of his parents until he reached driving age, Michael attended as many motor sport events as possible, including the first ever meetings at Silverstone and Goodwood and the Jersey Road Races.

His formal education completed, Michael spent a year at Art College followed by two years National Service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Three years in advertising studios in London provided valuable experience and in 1957 he went freelance. With a strong belief that there is no substitute for first hand involvement in order to portray such demanding subjects with authority and feeling, Michael has travelled extensively to the world's major race tracks to satisfy his need for authenticity, and he continues to visit several Grand Prix each year.

To the same end, he has flown in many service aircraft, from Tiger Moth and Lancaster to Harrier and Tornado, plus aerobatic sorties with the Red Arrows, to gain first hand impressions for his aviation paintings. Michael also holds a Private Pilots Licence and flies his own Chipmunk aircraft. He is a founder member of The Guild of Aviation Artists, of which he has twice been Chairman and is now President, and an Honorary Fellow of the Guild of Motoring Artists. His clients include many racing drivers, teams, sponsors, pilots, motor and aircraft manufacturers, R.A.F. and Army messes, museums and private collections worldwide, and he has held one man exhibitions in London, New York, Australia and the U.S.A., plus participation in specialist shows in the U.K. and Europe. To date, Michael has had six books of his paintings published - featuring aircraft of the Royal Air Force, Formula One Motor Racing, Aircraft of the Luftwaffe, Aviation Art, Monaco Grand Prix and Motor Sport Art. Married to his wife, Helen, in 1960. They have two daughters, Alison and Suzanne, as well as their son, Graham.

J Franklin Wright is generally regarded as Canada's foremost marine artist, specialising in ship portraits. He is influential for his explorations into the sparsely documented history of Canada's shipbuilding industry. More recently he has broadened his scope to include famous vessels from other parts of the world. His editions have received medals of distinction and his paintings are in many important private and corporate collections throughout the world
He has been strongly influenced by the great Dutch and British marine painters to whom he is so often compared. His paintings reflect both strong pictorial organisation and attention to detail. His style is based on clear precise drawing, luminous lighting effects and fluidity of water. He has been called a 'master of sea and sky'

J Franklin Wright has exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London, The Royal Institiute of Oil Painters, the American Society of Marine Painters and is a member of the International Society of Marine Painters in Florida. He is the only Canadian included in the influential marine volume , 20th Century British Marine Paintings, by Denys Brook-Hart.
