After an unusually poor start to the 2006 Moto GP season, Valentino Rossi and the Yamaha Team staged a remarkable come-back and slowly reduced the points lead of Honda's Nicky Hayden. In spite of breaking his wrist midway during the season, Valentino regained the Championship lead at the penultimate race, only to hand Hayden the title after an uncharacteristic error in the final showdown. Although not crowned the 2006 World Champion, Valentino remains the 'People's Champion' and will fight to regain his title in 2007.
